Advanced Fellowship in Mindfulness

We welcome our 2020-2021 Advanced Fellows Stephanie Palacios and Teresa Yeh!

This fellowship is a one-year half-time advanced training program within the Cambridge Health Alliance Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. The fellowship will support advanced mental health clinicians to build expertise in leading mindfulness-based interventions and providing mindfulness-oriented psychotherapy, learning from experts in the field and within an innovative environment at the forefront of integrating mindfulness into healthcare systems.

The fellowship includes participation in CMC’s MINDFUL-PC program, which integrates mindfulness training into primary care across CHA’s health system. This program has been demonstrated to enhance self-regulation and catalyze health behavior change among people with chronic illness in primary care. The fellowship also involves leadership opportunities to work with CMC to help grow the CHA Mindful Mental Health Service, which offers accessible mindfulness-based intervention groups for anyone who is seeking a holistic approach to mental health treatment. Through collaboration with the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy (IMP), fellows will have the opportunity for individual mindfulness-based psychotherapy supervision and mentorship from experienced, internationally-recognized supervisors. The fellowship includes a core didactic and experiential curriculum to deepen one’s own mindfulness practice, which is needed to be able to effectively offer this modality to others.

This collaborative advanced fellowship training program combines the resources of both CMC and IMP and provides training to individuals who are seeking to specialize in mindfulness- and compassion-based approaches to psychotherapy and
healthcare delivery.

This program, which includes supervision by senior clinicians at CMC and IMP, is based at the Central Street Care Center in Somerville, MA, and CMC in Cambridge, MA. Opportunities for additional half-time fellowship training in primary care integrated behavioral health at CHA may be available.

The program includes the following components:

1. Mindfulness-Based Intervention (MBI) Training (approximately 11 hours/week)

2. Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy Training (approximately 6 hours/week)

3. Didactic, Personal, and Experiential Training (approximately 3 hours/week)

4. Leadership, Integration of Mindfulness with Healthcare Systems, Teaching, and Academic Training

You can learn more about these components here.

Eligibility:

Doctoral candidates in APA or CPA-accredited clinical and counseling psychology graduate programs, who have completed an APA or CPA-accredited clinical internship, may apply for fellowships (applicants attending accredited school psychology programs, or clinical psychology graduate programs or internships with pending accreditations in which a self-study has been completed, will be considered).

Fellows are also expected to have met all requirements for the doctorate, including the dissertation, prior to starting the fellowship. Facility with verbal and written expression, as well as an excellent academic record is essential. Prior clinical work in both therapy and assessment, commitment to work in the public sector, and experience with persons with severe and persistent mental illness are strongly recommended. People from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Please note, however, that unfortunately the hospital is not able to sponsor H-1B Visas for postdoctoral fellows.
