Lauri Klein, LICSW will be leading an intensive mindfulness group through the outpatient psychiatry department at CHA for alumni of any 8-week mindfulness-based courses (MBSR, MSC and MTPC). This group will allow patients to strengthen or renew their mindfulness practice within a smaller group setting, emphasizing continuity. It gives an opportunity for people to develop ongoing mindfulness and then apply it to improve emotional health, deal with life's challenges, and enrich their lives.

Each session will include:

  • A guided practice
  • Time to discuss the practice and personal challenges along the way
  • Home practice assignments for the week

The group will be ongoing, and asks for a 12 week commitment with an opportunity to re-enroll at the end of the 12 weeks.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) - 8 Week Group

Location: CHA Central Street Clinic, 26 Central Street, Somerville, 2nd Floor Community Room

Payment: Billed to your health insurance as group therapy

We offer MBCT as a clinical group, using a protocol that was developed as a depression relapse prevention program and is also highly effective for patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. [click here for the JAMA meta analysis on MBCT] This intensive 8-week group with at least 30 minutes of daily home practice trains people in mindfulness practices that help them observe ways in which thoughts can drive mood and how mood can distort perspective. Through exploration and observation of the body/mind connection, participants learn to adjust patterns of behavior and move toward healthier states of mind. Paying attention in the present and bringing friendly curiosity to their experience enables participants to become more sensitive to the onset of symptoms and

    • Develop a stronger “Observing Self”

    • Learn to see thoughts as “just thinking” without feeding or fighting them

    • Understand the temporary nature of sensations, feelings and thoughts

    • Desensitize to automatic negative thoughts and feelings that occur spontaneously

…and through the training, develop more calm and ease with their emotions and more easily navigate the storms that sometimes accompany depression and anxiety.

The group will be co-led by Lauri Klein LICSW and Laura Warren, MD
